In the early 1930s, only stock and camel trains would take the Birdsville Track, made famous by outback legend Tom Kruse. Explore these remote areas which still evoke a great sense of adventure. Stay in the historic Birdsville Hotel; climb the sand dune, Big Red; explore the boulder opal town of Quilpie and underground buildings of Coober Pedy; and take a camel ride in Stuart’s Well before arriving in the oasis of Alice Springs.

Day 1

Home - Gunnedah
Our Queensland travellers will begin with a flight to Newcastle before joining our New South Wales passengers for lunch. This afternoon we will make our way via the Breeza Plains to Gunnedah for our overnight stay.

Day 2

Gunnedah - Roma
Travel through Moree on your way to Mungindi, on the border of New South Wales and Queensland, where you can stand in two states at once. Enjoy a picnic lunch today before stopping at the Thallon Silo Art enroute via St George, arriving in Roma for our overnight stay. Take time to admire the stately bottle trees lining the streets of Roma, a memorial to soldiers of the town.

Day 3

Roma - Quilpie
Visit Roma's clay Bicentennial Mural depicting the famous Harry Redford Cattle Duffing. Pass through Mitchell, the gateway to the outback and sing along to Slim Dusty's song 'Charleville' along the way. Keep your eye out for the precious gems that tell you that you're in boulder opal country, Quilpie.

Day 4

Quilpie - Birdsville
Birdsville is a small outback town on the banks of the Diamantina River between the sands of the Simpson Desert and the gibbers of Sturt's Stony Desert. The Birdsville Hotel is an Australian icon, built in 1884 and rich in history. Enjoy a drink in this famous pub, a true destination in itself before checking into our air conditioned ensuite rooms.

Day 5

Birdsville
This morning, explore the town with our guided town tour, including the famous Birdsville Race Track. At the Birdsville Bakery, be adventurous and perhaps purchase a camel pie for lunch. This afternoon, is at leisure prior to heading to challenge yourself to climb Nappamerri, known as 'Big Red'. This sand dune rises 90m above sea level and 35m above the surrounding plains. It is believed to be the highest dune in the desert, where a slow walk up will ensure you appreciate its mammoth height!

Day 6

Birdsville - Marree
Travel along the Birdsville Track into some of Australia's most remote country. Stopping for lunch at Mungerannie Hotel, have your photo taken in one of the original Tom Kruse mail trucks; this oasis was once a supply point for drovers travelling north to Queensland. This afternoon tour Marree, founded on a series of artesian springs by farmers in the 1870s. Afghan camel drivers also made it their home, and many of their descendants still live here today.

Day 7

Marree - Coober Pedy
Today we tick off some more iconic experiences when we join the Oodnadatta Track to the southern tip of Kati Thanda-Lake Eyre, stopping near the water's edge for morning tea. Lunch will be at the famous William Creek Hotel with a population of 10 - over lunch at the hotel you will meet most of the town! Cutting across the channel country to Coober Pedy, enjoy a guided tour, visiting through hand dug and modern dugouts showcasing underground Iiving, an underground Church and the chance to see and purchase some opals.

Day 8

Coober Pedy - Alice Springs
Travel the Stuart Highway to Marla and then onto the Northern Territory Border for the perfect photo opportunity. At Stuart's Well climb aboard a camel for a short ride at the foot of the James Ranges. Continue on to Alice Springs where we check in to our overnight accommodation.

Day 9

Alice Springs - Home
This morning take a tour of Alice Springs, including the old Telegraph Station, School of the Air and view Alice from Anzac Hill Lookout. We will then transfer you to the airport for your flight home.
