Canadian Rockies and Alaskan Cruise with Tarnya

Day 1 B, D

Fly Australia to Vancouver
Our tour departs from Brisbane or Sydney for our flight to Vancouver. On arrival in Vancouver we will visit Stanley Park, Coal Harbour and Granville Island before a walking tour through Gastown.
Accommodation: Holiday Inn Express Riverport (3 nights)

Day 2 B, D

A beautiful drive today as we travel the Sea to Sky Highway to Whistler Village, home of the 2010 Winter Olympics. Weather permitting, we will visit Grouse Mountain on the way home, to meet Grinder and Cooler, two orphaned grizzly bears.

Day 3 B, D

Vancouver Island
This morning we take an early morning drive past the vegetable and blueberry growing area of Surrey to catch the Ferry to Vancouver Island. An extended visit to the beautiful Butchart Gardens and the magnificent city of Victoria is yours to explore, with or without your Tour Director. Buffet Dinner on board tonight as we cruise back to Vancouver.

Day 4 B, D

Vancouver - Kamloops
Leaving beautiful Vancouver behind us we travel on the Trans Canada Highway through the Thompson Valley following the Fraser River. We will stop to ride the Air Tram at Hell’s Gate with a chance to see hummingbirds before continuing on to Kamloops.

Day 5 B, D

Kamloops - Jasper
Continuing our journey north along the North Thompson River, we make our way to the spectacular Canadian Rocky Mountains, arriving early afternoon to view Mt Robson. Early evening we roll into the old mining town of Jasper. Our accommodation for the next three nights will be in rustic riverside cabins right beside the Atabasca River and an elk refuge. Picnic dinner beside the river tonight.

Day 6 B, D

Today is all about lakes and mountains as we explore the countryside around Jasper, including a seven minute ride on the Jasper Tramway for magical views, with plenty of time allowed to explore the village of Jasper. After dinner join a Wild Life Spotting Drive as we search for bears and other animals.

Day 7 B, D

Another day to enjoy the beauty of the Rocky Mountains and Jasper National Park with a visit to Medicine Lake for wild life viewing and a cruise on stunning Maligne Lake. Here we will be able to stroll on Spirit Island and take unimaginable photos.

Day 8 B, D

Jasper - Banff
Driving south from Jasper on the Icefields Parkway, we will take the small walk to Athabasca Falls for up- close viewing. Continuing our scenic drive south to the Glacier Discovery Centre, we board the Ice Explorer that takes us onto the Athabasca Glacier. Here we can walk on ice up to 360 metres thick. Next is the glass-floored Glacier Skywalk suspended 280 metres over the Sunwapta Valley and providing stunning views of glittering glaciers and rugged mountain peaks. Drive past some of the most beautiful lakes, including Peyto Lake on our way to Banff.

Day 9 B, D

Take a ride in the Banff Gondola to the top of Sulphur Mountain for 360 degree views of the mountains, valleys and lakes that make up this spectacular area. The rest of the day is free to enjoy at your leisure. After dinner join a Wild Life Spotting Drive to Lake Minnewanka.

Day 10 B, D

Start the day with a scenic drive along the Bow Valley Parkway past Castle Mountain and the old POW Site. We will then spend time in one of the most beautiful places on earth, The Valley of Ten Peaks and Lake Louise. Enjoy visiting the historic Chateau Lake Louise or take a walk by the beautiful lakes. After dinner enjoy another Wild Life Spotting Drive.

Day 11 B, D

Banff - Kelowna
Leaving the Canadian Rocky Mountains we will travel the Trans Canada Highway past Wapta Lake and through Kicking Horse Pass to view the Spiral Railway Tunnel before continuing to enjoy the scenery of Yoho National Park all the way to the township of Golden, where we begin to follow the mighty Columbia River. Glacier National Park is another spectacular part of the country as we make our way to Kelowna, situated on the beautiful Okanagan Lake. Montana’s Steakhouse will delight our taste buds tonight, especially if we have room for their Mile High Mud Pie.

Day 12 B, D

Kelowna - Leavenworth
We continue our beautiful drive through this fruit growing area of the Okanagan Valley, passing through towns called Peachland and Summerland, stopping to purchase the local cherries and stone fruit. Later this afternoon we cross into the United States at Haines Point and will arrive at the Bavarian hamlet of Leavenworth in the Okanogan - Wenatchee National Forest. Vienna Schnitzel for dinner perhaps, followed by an after dinner game of golf as the sun sets very late in this part of the world!

Day 13 B, L, D

Leavenworth – Seattle
Plenty of time this morning to explore the shops and main street of this delightful village before our Bavarian lunch and scenic drive back to the Pacific Ocean and Seattle. Tonight, dinner is at Dukes Chowder House at Alki Beach where you can sample award winning chowders and the freshest seafood including Alaskan Halibut flown in daily

Day 14 B, D

Pike Place Market is known the world over for the freshest of produce and seafood. Watch the fish being thrown and enjoy the fragrance of the flower market. Have a coffee at the very first Starbucks. Relax on an afternoon Tour of Seattle before our special 4th July Dinner and Fireworks.

Day 15 B, D

A leisurely start this morning with time to explore on your own. This afternoon visit the Museum of Flight, which holds the largest air and space collection in the USA. Climb in the cockpit of an SR-71 Blackbird or an F/A 18 Hornet or attempt to land a space shuttle in the space simulator. See the incredible collection of aircraft, spacecraft, artifacts, galleries, exhibits, facts and stories that embody the past, present and future of flight.

Day 16 B, L, D

Seattle - Vancouver - Cruise Ship
An early start as we board our train for the magnificent coastal scenery rail journey known as the Amtrak Cascades Route to Vancouver. This four hour journey will be another special memory for years to come. On arrival in Vancouver we will make our way to our ship, the Norwegian Jewel. Once on board it’s time for lunch before settling into our ocean view cabin and later meeting for a Sail Away Dinner.

Day 17 B, L, D

Inside Passage
After a hearty breakfast, take an orientation tour with your Tour Director as you explore the ship and meet new friends while sailing north to Alaska. The highlight today will be cruising the Inside Passage between the mainland and Vancouver Island. There will be plenty of time to enjoy your day relaxing on board as well as wild life spotting. Or maybe you’d prefer to try your luck with a trivia competition or see one of the many on board shows.

Day 18 B, L, D

Ketchikan has the duel personality of Salmon Capital of the World and the wettest place on earth, and is ours to explore today. Its Tlingit Indian name, Kach Khanna, means "spread wings of the eagle." Chances are you'll see one of these magnificent birds perched atop a Sitka tree. Our Cruise Ship berths right in the middle of the historic old town. Take a walk down to the old red light district of Creek Street and cheer for your team at the Lumberjack Show.

Day 19 B, L, D

Juneau is the capital of Alaska and our port of call today. Today, Juneau is a thriving city offering a great blend of city amenities and small-town hospitality, all in the heart of Alaska's majestic mountains, rivers, glaciers, and forests. Nearly 31,000 people call Juneau home - many of them working in government, tourism, mining, and fishing, and all of them instilled with a deep love for the place. Plenty of time to explore this vibrant city.

Day 20 B, L, D

Today we arrive in the old gold rush town of Skagway. In a single year from 1896 to 1897, this remote town along the Inside Passage grew from a few tents to a city of 20,000 gold seekers. Today, travellers come in search of other riches – including to experience yesteryear along Skagway's charming boardwalk lined with buildings that replicate those Gold Rush days. You may have chosen optional activities such as the Whitehorse Railway or you can take the Parlour Car Tour followed by a walking tour of this old town. Enjoy free time to explore on your own.

Icy Straight Point - Glacier Bay
Take an optional early morning walk deck side to search for pods of orcas, sea otters and humpback whales. Venture “where the north wind doesn’t blow.” Known for this famous saying, Icy Strait Point is breathtaking and exciting, truly taking you where the wild things are. It’s one of the few places in the world where wildlife outnumbers the human population. Today is a day of cruising Glacier Bay. From glacial fjords to some of the highest peaks, Glacier Bay is a place of amazing scenery and wildness. If ever we needed a place to inspire us, this is it. Glacier Bay is home to thousands of animals, a national park, a designated wilderness, a biosphere reserve, and a world heritage site. It's a marine park, and a dedicated Ranger will be on board all day giving commentary as we cruise and marvel at all we see. With snowcapped mountains, spectacular glaciers, and the greenest of forests, Glacier Bay will forever stay in your heart.

Day 22 B, L, D

Cruising – Hubbard Glacier
Get up close and personal with the gigantic Hubbard Glacier, North America's largest tidewater glacier. It is 1350 square miles of blue ice and one of the most active in Alaska. With plenty of time to take photos and search for wild life before leaving the glacier, enjoy the tranquility of our last full day on board our lovely Jewel.

Day 23 B, D

This morning we wake up in the small fishing village of Seward. Disembark and board our bus and take a quick look at the small boat harbour before turning west to reach Exit Glacier. Travel on the Seward Highway through pristine Kenai Mountains above and below the tree line and pass through Moose Pass to arrive at the Alaska Wildlife Conservation Centre. Here we can view bison, elk, eagles, moose, caribou and musk oxen in a natural setting. At the Alveska Ski Resort we take a tram up 2300 feet to enjoy the spectacular views of seven glaciers and Turnagain Arm (weather permitting). Drive past the Ship Creek area where the salmon swim upstream and the fishermen try to catch them; see Cook Inlet and Lake Hood. Arrive at our Hotel to relax and unwind, later walk over to Lake Hood to watch the float planes take off and land before enjoying our Farewell Dinner.

Day 24 B, D

Anchorage - Vancouver
On a morning Trolley Tour around the city of Anchorage, learn about this fascinating city while enjoying a 15 mile fully narrated tour. While we relax, our informative Alaskan guide shares history, family stories and helps us appreciate Anchorage’s past and present. Highlights include Mysterious Earthquake Park, Alaska Railroad, Westchester Lagoon, float planes departing from Lake Hood and Lake Spenard, breath-taking mountain ranges, Anchorage’s historic neighbourhoods, wildlife sightings, Anchorage’s famous flowers and much more! After lunch we make our way to the Airport to board our late afternoon flight to Vancouver. Upon arrival, we will have dinner before boarding our Air Canada flight direct from Vancouver to Brisbane.
