Day 1

Home – Townsville – Charters Towers
On arrival into Townsville, journey west over the range to Charters Towers. A town tour will highlight the unrivalled architecture and unique history which makes this one of the most beautiful inland cities in Queensland. Charters Towers became a gold rush town when gold was discovered in 1871 and is now home to over 60 buildings of historical significance.


Day 2

Charters Towers – Richmond
Our day starts with a visit to the largest herd of Texas Longhorn cattle in Australia. Learn more about the blood stock lines of these massive beasts during a wagon ride. Purchase your own lunch in the town centre before travelling through Brahman country towards Hughenden and Richmond for our overnight stay.

Day 3

Richmond – Winton
Visit Kronosaurus Korner, a centre designed to display fossils from the inland sea that covered a large section of Queensland 120 million years ago, during the Cretaceous period. Enjoy lunch in Julia Creek, home to the curious Dunnart, a small almost extinct marsupial that lives in the local Mitchell grass before travelling on to Kynuna for an afternoon stop at the iconic Blue Heeler Hotel. Continue on to Winton for our overnight stay.

Day 4

Winton – Lark Quarry, Age of Dinosaurs Museum – Longreach
Travel south west of Winton to Lark Quarry, one of the best displays of a dinosaur stampede. These tracks are the fossilised remains of the only dinosaur stampede that has been found on earth. This afternoon visit the Age of Dinosaurs Museum for lunch followed by a guided tour through the collection room, where bones are brought in and categorized, and to see the laboratory where cleaning and restoration takes place. Late afternoon arrive at the Tropic of Capricorn town of Longreach.

Day 5

Longreach – Stockman’s Hall of Fame – Qantas Museum
Visit the Stockman’s Hall of Fame telling the outback stories of ringers to stock men and women who keep the country running come alive. Ring the bells or press the fleece and cast your mind back to the early days. Purchase your own lunch before we visit the QANTAS Founders Outback Museum where we will take a self-guided tour. Late afternoon we’ll board the ‘Billabong’ to cruise the Thomson River, a 10km natural waterway called the ‘Long Reach’, to enjoy a genuine camp oven dinner with songs and yarns in a delightful setting.

Day 6

Longreach – Barcaldine
Today we will visit Ilfracombe and explore the town’s outdoor machinery museum. Enjoy lunch at the local pub before travelling on to Barcaldine. Stop in the main street to see the Tree of Knowledge, which symbolises the birthplace of the Australian Labor Party following the Great Shearers’ Strike, which also saw the birth of the Country Party. Check into our accommodation and after dinner, take a short tour of Barcaldine by night where the Tree of Knowledge will be lit up in all its splendour.

Day 7

Barcaldine – Workers Heritage Centre – Cosmos Experience – Charleville
This morning roll up to one of the Big Tops from Expo 88. This is now a permanent fixture of The Barcaldine Workers Heritage Centre, highlighting the contribution that ordinary people made to Queensland and Australia, such as school teachers, flying doctors and travelling salesmen. Stop for lunch in the Jackie Howe home town of Blackall before continuing on via Tambo, the location for some of the ‘Smiley’ classics and well known for Stan Costers country music winner, Augathella Fella. Tonight we will have an early dinner at our Charleville accommodation before visiting the Cosmos Centre, taking advantage of its powerful telescope bringing the universe closer.

Day 8

Charleville – Bourke
Take a short tour this morning of this progressive town, from opal mining to the ‘Save the Bilby Fund’. Journey through remote country of huge properties of cattle and sheep. Stop for an early lunch at Cunnamulla, another town immortalised by Stan Coster’s The Cunnamulla Fella. After leaving the Channel Country of Queensland behind, cross into New South Wales, where the country opens up to large single river watercourses. Learn more of the river system of the Western Darling at the new Back O Bourke water exhibition centre.

Day 9

Bourke – Dubbo
Today a local guide comes on board to share ‘their town’ with you. Hear of some of the new developments for Bourke from cotton and citrus to melons and jojoba, to the legendary humanitarian Fred Hollows. Climb aboard the fully restored Jandra paddleboat as we cruise the Darling River. This afternoon, see the country change from the red outback to the black soil plains of the central west. Broad acre agriculture, including cotton, sorghum and wheat, is being cultivated between stock grazing. Our last night of this remarkable holiday is in Dubbo - the Hub of the West.

Day 10

Dubbo – Home
Today we travel through the Central West region, stopping for morning tea at the historical Cook Park in Orange. Continue on via the beautiful Blue Mountains, stopping for lunch before arriving into Sydney mid afternoon. Say goodbye to our Queensland friends at Sydney Airport before returning home to the Hunter.
