Sydney – Batemans Bay
Traveling south to Wollongong, take in views from the top of Stanwell Pass and the amazing Seacliff Bridge. In Kiama visit the blowhole before arriving in Batemans Bay on the Clyde River.
Batemans Bay – Eden
Morning tea will be at the fishing village of Bermagui, made famous by American author and big game fisherman Zane Grey. The next stop along the coast is Tathra and its maritime museum. Travel inland
to Bega for a cheese tasting and lunch, and stop next at the old whaling and now whale conservation town of Eden. In the afternoon board the Cat Balou for a whale and dolphin-watching cruise, and learn about the vibrant local fishing industry.
Eden – Lakes Entrance
After crossing the border into Victoria, travel through State Forest timber country to Cann River. At Orbost the tour will follow the Snowy River to its outlet into the sea at Marlo. The second cruise of the trip will occur over lunch on board the paddle steamer Curlip, with lovely views of grazing country. Arrive at Lakes Entrance in the afternoon. Staying in the heart of the town, there are great opportunities to take a walk over the bridge to the beach area, where the wooden carvings along the water’s edge make for wonderful photos. Dinner is at your own expense, with options including local restaurants, cafés or a club near the hotel.
Lakes Entrance – Melbourne
In Bairnsdale visit St Mary’s Catholic Church, known for its distinctively tall tower and the murals on its ceiling and walls painted by Italian artist Francesco Floreani. Shipwrecks are an important part of this tour and at the Melbourne Maritime Museum you can experience hands on the many exhibits. The museum has a focus on Bass Strait and the Roaring Forties winds, which drove the early sailing ships
across the Southern Ocean and into King Island.
Melbourne – King Island
Arrive at Essendon Airport for a short flight to King Island where our local guide will start with a tour of the main township of Currie. This evening the tour continues through Naracoopa, Sea Elephant Bay
and the mining town of Grassy. At sunset watch the antics of Little Penguins as they stand and call to each other before returning to their burrows on shore.
King Island North
At Yellow Rock Lookout there are great views of Yellow Rock River and Phoques Bay. The tallest lighthouse in the Southern Hemisphere, is at Cape Wickham. Hear tales of shipwrecks at the lighthouse. Continue to Penny’s Lagoon, an unusual perched freshwater lake. The holy grater of cheese lovers is the King Island cheese room. Enjoy a cheese tasting and the ability to purchase directly from the factory.
King Island South
The south of the island is where Australia’s worst civil maritime disaster occurred when the Cataraqui was shipwrecked with the loss of 400 lives. Explore the unusual limestone features of the Calcified
Forest for a walk and a picnic lunch before visiting the rugged coastline of Seal Rocks and Surprise Bay. Return to the motel through Pear Shape and Lymwood areas.
King Island – Flinders Island
Free time in Grassy before our chartered flight to Flinders Island. The island was discovered by Matthew Flinders and is the largest of an archipelago of 52 islands that make up the Furneaux Group in Eastern Bass Strait. Take in the views from Vinegar Hill Lookout towards Franklin Sound and Cape Barren Island.
Flinders Island, Sawyers Bay
After a hearty breakfast, re-board the coach for a full day of touring taking in secluded coves and the rugged coastline. Journey up to high lookouts and through the very heart of the island’s central mountain range. There will be a few short walks throughout the day as you learn about the island’s history, plants and wildlife. Visit the beach at Castle Rock and Tanners Bay for morning tea. Enjoy a picnic lunch today before an afternoon at Palana and The Dock, with afternoon tea at Sawyers Bay.
Flinders Island, Yellow Beach
Today tour the other half of the island, taking in Trousers Point Beach and spectacular views from Walkers Hill Lookout. Tales of early shipwrecks will be told over lunch at the Interstate Hotel. Visit a museum at Emita and historic Wybalenna, site of the last Aboriginal mission in Tasmania.
Flinders Island – Albury
Board the plane for a flight back to Melbourne. Transfer to Albury by coach. Alternatively we can organise flights from Melbourne returning to either Sydney or Newcastle.
Albury – Sydney
Make your way north on the coach, stopping for morning tea and lunch and arriving back in Sydney early afternoon and the Hunter later in the day.
