Brisbane - Mackay - Broken River
After flying into Mackay, enjoy lunch before travelling into the Pioneer Valley. Visit Melba House, originally built in 1882 and was the home of Dame Nellie Melba for the first year of her married life. A beautiful array of photos, books and furniture of her time are on display. Continue on to the town of Eungella (pronounced yun-galah) to settle in for three nights at the Broken River Resort. This time of year can be quite cold in the early mornings and evenings, and the resort's log fireplace is sure to be a popular place to spend time with your fellow travellers.
Eungella Free Day
As you wake to the crisp mountain air in this beautiful area, you may choose to take the opportunity to explore before breakfast. One of the highlights of the Eungella National Park area is the shy wild Platypus, and word has it, Broken River is the most reliable place to see these mammals. Today is at your leisure. Take advantage of the resort facilities, sit back and relax, enjoy a short stroll into the adjacent National Park or, for the more adventurous, take one of the renowned walking trails. A picnic style lunch will be provided for your lunch today. Dinner will be served at the resort and after dinner tonight, join a guide for a unique nocturnal walk.
Today we will travel back down the range to visit Finch Hatton Gorge, home to some very rare and unique flora and fauna. Enjoy lunch at Eungella Chalet, where you will never tire of the stunning views. This afternoon offers the opportunity to enjoy some of the walking tracks in the area. Another must is the Eungella National Parks Tourist Information Office, located in the parklands across the river from the resort.
