Day 1
Home - King Island - Currie
Your tour begins with a flight via Melbourne and then onto King Island. Situated off the north-west coast of Tasmania, King Island is surrounded by a rugged coastline with famously good produce and some of the cleanest air in the world. On arrival, we'll be met by our local guide who will show us the main township of Currie before checking into our accommodation for the next three nights.
Day 2
Martha Lavinia Beach - Pennys Lagoon - Lighthouse - King Island Dairy
Today we travel to the northern end of the island. Stop at the Shag Lagoon Bird Hide to view some of King Island's beautiful water fowl, before continuing to Reekara School. The Reekara Community Complex is a Lions Club initiative designed to preserve the former Reekara Primary School, which closed at the end of 1997. Next, travel to Quarantine Bay to take in the views of Christmas Island and New Year Island before crossing to the eastern side of the island. Visit Martha Lavinia Beach and see the mouth of Yellow Rock River, stop at Penny's Lagoon, and pass by Lake Flannigan and Disappointment Bay to the most northern point of King Island. Here we'll see Cape Wickham Lighthouse, the tallest granite lighthouse in the Southern Hemisphere which overlooks Australia's number 1 top ranking golf course. Our final stop for the day is at King Island Dairy, before returning to our accommodation to freshen up before dining out at a local restaurant for dinner.
Day 3
Calcified Forest - Naracoopa - Grassy - Penguins
Today visit Sea Elephant River before returning to Naracoopa for morning tea. Our journey then takes us to the southern end of the island, passing by Surprise Bay. After lunch at the King Island Brewhouse, stop at the Calcified Forest where we'll take a leisurely stroll to a viewing platform overlooking the intriguing fossilised stumps of ancient rainforest trees. Next, overlook one of King Island's most dramatic coastlines from Seal Rocks Lookout, before stopping at Raff Family Farm to learn about farming life on the island. Last stop today is in the township of Grassy where we discover the scheelite mining heritage of King Island's Dolphin Mine. This evening, enjoy dinner at a local restaurant before viewing the local little penguin colony, where on dusk, the penguins waddle out of the water to return to their burrows.
