Brisbane - Roma
Sit back and relax as we set out on this adventure and let outback Queensland come alive. Travel via Toowoomba before arriving at the Historical Village in Miles where lunch will be waiting for you. Memories of yesteryear are sure to flood back as you stroll around the grounds of this very well kept complex. Resume your journey on to Roma where we will stay overnight.
Day 2
Roma - Quilpie
Visit Roma's clay Bicentennial Mural depicting the famous Harry Redford Cattle Duffing. Pass through Mitchell - the gateway to the outback, Charleville and Cooladdi before arriving into boulder opal country, for our overnight stay in Quilpie.
Day 3
Quilpie - Birdsville
Travel to Windorah, located in the heart of the Channel Country, before joining the Birdsville Developmental Road. This afternoon, arrive in Birdsville, situated on the banks of the Diamantina River. The Birdsville Hotel is an Australian icon, built in 1884 and rich in history. Enjoy a drink in this famous pub, a true destination in itself, before checking into your airconditioned, ensuited room.
Day 4
Birdsville - Big Red
Today we spend time exploring Birdsville. See the iconic Birdsville Race Track as well as the Power Station and Birdsville Cemetery. Enjoy lunch at the Birdsville Hotel before taking time to wander this small outback town at your leisure. Conditions permitting, we will also visit 'Big Red' this afternoon, where the sunsets over the desert are breathtaking.
Day 5
Birdsville - Boulia
Well and truly in the Queensland Outback, your travels today take in the Administrative Centre of the Diamantina - Bedourie. This community has a school, police station, Flying Doctor Medical Clinic along with other township stores. Continuing north on the Eyre Developmental Road, you will reach the proclaimed capital of the Channel Country - Boulia. It's a friendly, relaxed town on the Burke River, first settled by Europeans in 1877. Overnighting in the Desert Sands Motel or Australia Hotel/Motel gives the opportunity to hear more experiences from the locals who call the area home.
Day 6
Boulia - Mount Isa
Visiting the Min Min Light Centre and the Stone Cottage brings Boulia to life. With an approximate population of 300 in town, visitors to the area are very important. Enjoy lunch before heading along the Diamantina Development Road to Mount Isa where we will stay overnight.
Day 7
Mount Isa - Barkly Homestead - Tennant Creek
It soon becomes apparent just how big our country is. Camooweal will be the last town before crossing the border into the Northern Territory. From here we will travel past Avon Downs Cattle Station and stop for lunch at Barkly Homestead. Continue onto the Three Ways, where the Barkly and Stuart Highways meet, before arriving into Tennant Creek.
Day 8
Tennant Creek - Alice Springs
Today we travel south, stopping at the Aboriginal Dreaming site of Karlu Karlu, otherwise known as the Devils Marbles. Explore along the short self-guided walking trail which offers informative signage, and view the red rocks that range in size from 50cm to 6 metres wide, balancing precariously on top of one another. Continue on to Barrow Creek, which was the chosen site for an Overland Telegraph Morse Repeater Station, linking Australia to Europe and providing essential communication services. This afternoon travel via the tiny town of Ti-Tree before arriving in Alice Springs, which lies in the physical and spiritual heart of Australia's Red Centre. It is surrounded on all sides by the jagged MacDonnell Ranges and straddles the usually dry Todd River.
